Chissano

Chissano was born in Chicavane, Manjacaze, Gaza Province, in 1935. He spent his first 11 years in the village, where his grandmother had a strong influence on his outlook in life. Expelled from his mission school, Chissano went to Lourenço Marques (Maputo) at the age of 12 to work as a servant-boy until the age of 18 when he went to South Africa as a miner. On his return to Mozambique, he was pressed into the colonial army. When he left the forces he went as an attendant to the Nucleo de Arte, Maputo, where he came to know artists from whom he learned many techniques and methods. His work is represented in many of the world’s galleries and museums. He has shown in individual exhibitions in Mozambique, Portugal, Italy and West Germany, and in many collective exhibitions in Mozambique and abroad.
