Samate

Samate was born in Maputo in 1939. From the age of six he avidly sketched everything around him. From about 1956 he began to devote himself particularly to painting, turning later to metal and wood sculpture. He is, however, particularly distinguished at abstract painting in oils. He had his first individual showing in the 1960s in Maputo, and he has shown in collective exhibitions in Maputo, Rome, Stockholm, Oslo, Lagos, London, Amsterdam, Moscow, Sofia, Luanda, Harare, Berlin and Lisbon. He spent four months in Moscow on a scholarship, and three months on attachment to Antonio Inverno’s studio in Lisbon.
